Counseling for Children and Families

Counseling for Children
Father and Children

HAVE YOU NOTICED UNUSUAL BEHAVIORS OR MOOD CHANGES IN YOUR CHILD?

We all know that there is no manual to raising a resilient, confident, secure child. Parenting books can be helpful and we encouraged parents to read them, but many children who have unique emotional, behavioral and developmental needs will need an individually tailored approach, which can be found through family counseling. We will work with your family to support you in your own unique journey and help you create an action plan and find solutions that will meet your family's needs.

DOES YOUR CHILD WORRY A LOT AND NO AMOUNT OF REASSURANCE SEEMS TO HELP?

Anxiety disorders are very common in young children. Most issues related to childhood anxiety can be resolved through short term therapy consisting of family counseling and child focused cognitive-behavioral therapy where a child learns to control their own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR SERVICES FOR A CHILD UNDER THE AGE OF 5?

Please note that for children under the age of 6, counseling will be focused primarily on parenting and will not involve 1:1 work with the child unless one of the following is true:

1. The family is specifically looking for DIR/Floor-time or Autplay therapy with one of our counselors

2. The family is looking for a consultation with one of our counselors due to concerns about the child's development or behavior

A consultation will include an initial assessment visit where the young child and at least one parent are present, which may be followed by parenting sessions, family sessions or by DIR or Autplay sessions should those be recommended based on the assessment.

Autism and Neurodiversity

Autism and Neurodiversity

One of our specialties is supporting the mental health needs of neurodivergent children, teens and adults. Whether you or your child have been formally diagnosed with ADHD, Autism, Learning Disorders, etc. or you are just starting to explore the possibility of being neurodivergent, we are here to support you on this journey.

Questions that often come up in counseling can be very specific, such as:

"I think I might be autistic. Now what?"

"How and when do I tell my child about their diagnosis?"

"How do I help my neurodivergent child feel happy and confident about himself?"

Questions may also be more general and not specific to one's diagnosis. We focus on the mental health needs of our clients and offer counseling in a way that is supportive, individualized and neurodiversity affirming.

Family therapy can help caregivers develop better understanding of the unique needs and strengths of their child.

Children and teens benefit from counseling through learning ways to be in control of their own mind and body, manage their emotions, bounce back from disappointments, navigate social relationships and adapt to change. Individual counseling can be instrumental in helping children and adults develop a positive self-image and self-accepting attitude. Our goal is to help each person feel empowered by embracing their individuality and by knowing how to advocate for themselves and be successful in all areas of their lives.

"Just because someone does not talk, does not mean they have nothing to say". Autism presents differently in different people and we firmly believe that each person can benefit from counseling with the right approach to communication and processing feelings and emotions. We respect communication and sensory differences and look beyond behaviors to support our clients in managing difficult emotions and developing effective self-regulation and self-advocacy skills.

IS PARENTING PROVING TO BE A BIGGER CHALLENGE THAN YOU EVER EXPECTED?

Parenting is hard and not seeing positive results can leave you feeling hopeless and discouraged. What if you could set limits with you children and, at the same time, make them feel safe, secure and connected? When children feel safe and connected, they are more likely to make good choices for themselves, which in turns makes our job as parents a lot easier. Supporting caregivers of neurodivergent children is one of our specialties. Telehealth sessions are available to parents and caregivers who may not have time to schedule their own therapy in between their child(ren)'s therapy appointments.

MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH

Following childbirth, 10-15% of all women experience postpartum depression or anxiety. Maternal Mental Health counseling helps women going through all stages of motherhood: from planning and conception to delivery and early parenting. Maternal Mental Health specialists deal with infertility, pregnancy loss, and other issues that can have a negative impact on a woman's overall health and quality of life.
